There's much more to learn there than just seeing a litter announcement with flowery show results :)Katohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15300152062353477753noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2734462636905794264.post-19514928986223558612020-08-24T16:30:25.672+09:002020-08-24T16:30:25.672+09:00Yes, an untrained eye giving you a fresh perspecti...Yes, an untrained eye giving you a fresh perspective can help.Katohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15300152062353477753noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2734462636905794264.post-80754151197333104702020-08-24T16:30:01.771+09:002020-08-24T16:30:01.771+09:00Yes, finding someone to be your mentor is no easy ...Yes, finding someone to be your mentor is no easy task (even in Japan). I reckon every dog out there has something to give back to the breed, even if it is just a few more genes.Katohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15300152062353477753noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2734462636905794264.post-80010300036072398972020-08-23T12:20:15.258+09:002020-08-23T12:20:15.258+09:00What an excellent lesson to learn. I've definitely noticed that as I learn more about type and structure I've become more critical, and I have to remember to consider all the great aspects they have. I have heard that asking an "untrained eye" which dog or puppy they like can sometimes highlight something you may have missed. kchristenson2735https://www.blogger.com/profile/02402980774341928690noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2734462636905794264.post-58181708982764259742020-08-14T07:02:19.284+09:002020-08-14T07:02:19.284+09:00I really wish I could have someone in Kishu who co...I really wish I could have someone in Kishu who could have mentored me, but I did and do my best looking at what friends and other enthusiasts and more experienced breeders post.

I know I'm pretty critical of my dogs when I look at them, and pick out all the things I don't like often, but I do my best to celebrate the things that they have and I love. I find even my most - erm - humble looking Kishu has traits I value and have come to think are good traits to be preserved. And that homely dog has given me some dogs with the nicest attitudes/character I think I have... and I don't think that's worth nothing.Crisphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04778920208503720669noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2734462636905794264.post-7184439675572722912020-08-11T20:12:50.318+09:002020-08-11T20:12:50.318+09:00That's neat to hear. Those are the first things you notice. When you become a student of the breed, you begin to notice faults, and all too often these are the first things you will comment on. But a true breed preservationist/specialist should see the good traits in the dog first. What parts of this dog do you want to pass on to the next generation?"

This is also mentioned in Western dog circles. That in the beginning, newbies didn't know anything. Then 1-5 years in, they fixate on faults and when they don't progress, they burn out.

It's when they re-set their mindset, to see out knowledge, to now see the attributes instead of just the faults, that they progress. aykhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00713476142996647730noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2734462636905794264.post-18754855750353913362020-08-10T11:23:07.224+09:002020-08-10T11:23:07.224+09:00The last paragraph is so well said!
