I only had an hour or so to say hello to everyone, so I didn't snap many pics. The weather was perfect for the dogs, and there were over 150 entries.

The Nihon Ken Forum

I get asked a lot of questions pertaining to owning the Japanese breeds, and to be honest, I don't have enough time to deal with every request. Most people who find my blog have probably already found The Nihon Ken Forum but if not, you now have the link! It is a web forum dedicated to the native Japanese dog breeds, and is chock full of useful information. The members there are terrific, knowledgeable, and friendly, so stop by and become a member if you haven't already! I've been on the forum for several years now, and I've picked the brains of the forum for loads of useful information and knowledge.

Why I Don't Export Dogs Anymore

I originally started exporting dogs to help fans/fanciers/breeders/preservationists of the Nihon Ken to import better dogs from Japan. Most of the Japanese breeds other than the Shiba are not very popular in Japan, so in the interest of their preservation I surmised that getting gene pools set up overseas would help to preserve the dwindling populations here in Japan. I started this around 15 years ago, and generally I feel that everyone coming together has been successful in getting the Nihon Ken into a better preservation space. Seeing the massive drop in population numbers over the past 5 years for the Hokkaido and Kishu in Japan for instance, shows the importance of having these back up gene pools available. The day will come when Nihon Ken will need to be imported back to Japan. No More JKC Export Pedigrees

EDIT June 4th, 2021: JKC has announced on their website how they will be handling the new change. I've written about it in the following blog post http://www.nihonken.co/2021/06/appendix-registration.html ################################################ So this is timely, and will affect all fans of the Nihon Ken overseas who are interested in breeding/showing their dogs. This past weekend the Japan Kennel Club held a board meeting at which they voted to no longer give full registration to dogs registered with NIPPO, AKIHO, DOKENHO (and some other Japanese registries). This new rule will take effect from January 1st, 2022. What does this mean? Well, take a walk with me down the rabbit hole. It means that after January 1st, 2022, dogs with NIPPO or AKIHO pedigrees can only receive a 'limited/appendix/wait list' registration with JKC. Dogs with appendix registration cannot receive a full registration JKC export pedigree. Any dogs being exported would only have an AKIHO or N
