The Nihon Ken Forum

I get asked a lot of questions pertaining to owning the Japanese breeds, and to be honest, I don't have enough time to deal with every request. Most people who find my blog have probably already found The Nihon Ken Forum but if not, you now have the link! It is a web forum dedicated to the native Japanese dog breeds, and is chock full of useful information. The members there are terrific, knowledgeable, and friendly, so stop by and become a member if you haven't already! I've been on the forum for several years now, and I've picked the brains of the forum for loads of useful information and knowledge.

What Happened to the Akita?

I truly wonder about how this breed has changed so much over the years. It started as a medium sized hunting breed (quite similar to the other Nihon Ken), then morphed into a fighting breed, mixed with all sorts of western breeds, proclaimed a national treasure, and morphed back into looking more like a Nihon Ken (like the dog in the picture above). Then for some reason it took a turn down a road that turned it into a hyper type breed, of a type that was never before seen in the breed. I hear people overseas get all romantic about the Akita, but I have to say that after owning all the Nihon Ken, in my opinion owning a modern Akita is much more like owning a western (non-native) breed. From a NIPPO member's perspective, and just a general fan of the Nihon Ken, I just scratch my head when I look at the Akita today. But hey, if that's your cup of tea... However when it comes to the Japanese breeds, very few are shown in the JKC system. The Nihon Ken have their own registries that always have been and continue to be the premier registries for the 6 aboriginal breeds. NIPPO (Nihon Ken Hozonkai or Japanese Dog Preservation Society) registers all 6 breeds, but is the main registry for the Shikoku, Kishu, and Shiba. AKIHO (Akita Inu Hozonkai or Akita Dog Preservation Society) is the main registry for the Akita. The Hokkaido is registered with DOKENHO (Hokkaido Ken Hozonkai) or DOKENKYO (Hokkaido Ken Kyokai), and the Kai is registered with the Kai Ken Aigokai (Kai Dog Protection Society).
