Healthy Weight

I see a lot of overweight pets. In fact most of the dogs that I see are overweight. It doesn't bother me too much, but when some ignoramus comes along that freaks out about my dogs' weight, I just want to clobber them. My dogs are at working weight, especially during the hunting season, and they definitely look thin and muscly compared to most dogs out there.

Here's a great post on the subject that includes a useful method for checking if your dog is over or under weight.

Even in the show world, I notice that a lot of the NK overseas are shown at weights that would draw a comment or two from the judge in a NIPPO ring. These are hunting breeds, and should show athleticism, agility, and strong but light movement.

  1. LOL. These are hunting dogs! Smack those people on the head with a picture of a blood-splattered Baron.

  2. Akira is slightly underweight, kinda like the underweight dog on the link. T would be perfect if he could maintain a weight like Baron but unfortunately he doesn't like eating that much!

    1. Baron gets much thinner by the end of the season. I'll have to take some pictures this year.

  3. Buff Baron looks Ideal for working the steep hill slopes, gotta love the goth hair color (lol). I think any thinner and it's time to up the calories a bit though. I do see a lot of chubby dogs in the U.S. The size of dog bowls here hold enough food to fed a bear. Most just fill it up without thinking. Out of curiosity how much does Baron get fed? I know mushers when working dogs only feed a small amount at a time.

    1. It's tough to keep weight on him as he has a sensitive stomach. Going overboard on the calories tends to break down his system. I've learned how to balance the number of meals and what he eats to how he's doing physically.

Off season Baron eats twice a day, 1 1/2 cups of kibble with some meat/rice, depending on the day. Yesterday all the dogs got pumpkin with their kibble instead.

  4. Thanks for the info. Agreed, each dog has their own nutritional needs it seems, and keeping them at ideal weight levels can take some juggling to get it just right depending the activities they partake in. Enjoy the fall season with Baron : )
