Narita!

I was asked by a friend to help with the export of some Shiba and Akita for kennels in Spain/France. 3 Shiba ended up staying here with me for a few days, it was interesting. I'm not a huge fan of the breed, but may own some one day just for the sake of experiencing the breed. I've met very few Shiba that I would want to own as a companion.

These three were great with me, though the female was an extremely vocal girl, very clingy, and had the most annoying Shiba whine. Sweet as hell though, and loved everybody, but very snappy toward other dogs. One male was just plain not happy with any and all dogs, not too over the top, but he was great with me. The last and oldest male was the nicest of the bunch, a NIPPO 'honbusho' winner. I liked his type and temperament. Him I would own. He was put together well, had nice attitude and movement, a very serious boy, but played well with the puppies here at my place.

On the day of the flight we caused quite a commotion at the Air France counter, as it looked like the circus was coming to town! I've heard that everyone made it home safely, and the dogs are doing well. I hope they help bolster the blood lines in Europe.

  3. I always wanted to own a Shikoku (as you know it is pretty hard to get one in Europe), and my friend had an Akita, so I ended up with a Shiba male that lost his home. After some time I got a second one from a rescue that was once very aggressive because people mistreated him.
Ever since them, I am so glad to have two Shiba boys although both of them aren't easy; the best dogs I can imagine. I hope, one day, you are able to have a new access to this wonderful breed. Maybe they can change your mind ♥

    1. While the Shiba temperament is not necessarily my cup of tea, I have seen some nice ones out there. Glad you're enjoying your 2 boys!

    2. May I ask you what the Shiba temperament is supposed to be? I have an idea what you mean...
If you have time, I would be interested.

    3. I don't necessarily have an opinion on what the temperament is 'supposed to be', but I know what I prefer and dislike in my dogs. Many of the Shiba I know are very snarky, have quick tempers, and can be very vocal (in an annoying pitch) when they are unhappy.
I prefer my dogs to be relaxed and quiet when there's nothing going on (which requires good judgement on their part), and to be patient with other people and dogs, but to have plenty of drive and skill on the hunt. So far my Kishu fits this bill very well, and my Kai was also excellent in this regard. My Shikoku, not so much.
